Chesham, a market town with a population of 23,000 in Buckinghamshire’s Chiltern Hills and 25 miles northwest of London. The town is situated in the pretty Chess Valley, the River Chess is a chalk-stream tributary of the River Colne. This little river allowed much industry and the growing of watercress in the Victorian era, Chesham is now mainly a commuter town, though there are issues with mobile communications with being in a valley. The town featured on TV in both Inspector Morse and Midsommer Murders as it is charming, with St Mary’s church dating from the 12th century. Post-war a sizeable Muslim community became established and a mosque was completed in 2005. The High Street with its mix of specialist shops and big retailers was pedestrianised in 1990. It also houses the last station on the Metropolitan Line of the London Underground and opposite it is Lowndes Park, donated to the town in 1953. There are 2 public swimming pools, a leisure centre, an independent cinema - Elgiva Theatre, a small museum (free and open all year) and one of the largest Christmas Tree Farms in the South East! The Chesham and Ley Hill Golf Club is 9 holes and par 67, accepting visitors mid-week only. There are a few pubs, notably The King’s Arms which allegedly has ghosts! There is only 1 B&B here in Lowndes Avenue, yet Luton Airport is only 15 miles away!
