About five miles west of Peterlee and six miles east of Durham, in north east England in County Durham, lies the village of Thornley. The village is part of the Sedgefield constituency of which former Prime Minister Tony Blair was Member of Parliament from 1983 to 2007. The church of St Bartholomew, dating from 1843 and sited in the heart of the village was demolished in 2007 with plans for a housing development to be built on the site once the gravestones have been moved. The stained glass windows are being preserved however with plans for them to be displayed in the future. In line with many villages in that locality, Thornley grew rapidly with the development of coal mining, the first shaft being sunk in 1835 and the coals delivered to Hartlepool by rail shortly after, helping to ensure Hartlepool’s future role as a major port. There is virtually no sign now of the once extensive plant and machinery. The colliery closed in 1970 with a loss of over 900 jobs, which devastated the village. The first meeting of the Durham Miners Association, with Thornley miners playing a key role in its formation, was held in 1869 in the grounds of the Half Way House pub, one of the oldest buildings in the village, since extensively refurbished and extended, now called the Crossways Hotel.
