Shotley Bridge is a picturesque village positioned in the Derwent Valley in the county of Durham in north east England. It's surrounded by beautiful countryside and woodland and dates back to the Bronze Age. From its agricultural beginnings, it grew and prospered and is perhaps famed for its fine craftsmanship in the production of sword making which was undertaken by German master craftsman who fled from persecution in the 17th Century. The village is on the banks of the River Derwent and near to the town of Consett. Although swords are no longer produced here, the area attracts visitors and holiday makers alike with its stone houses and cottages from across the ages which are mingled with buildings and housing from modern times, together with a church that's dedicated to St Cuthbert's which dates back to 1850. There is an interesting mix of shops, restaurants and pubs which will appeal to most tastes, and, for those who wish to linger there is a good choice of B&B's and cottages. A stroll along the banks of the river which journeys through the village is always pleasurable although walkers will be tempted to make for the North Pennines close by where the wildlife, and stunning scenery will be hard to resist.
