Romaldkirk is a small village in Teesdale in County Durham in north east England, between Barnard Castle to the south and Middleton-in-Teesdale to the north-west. After the Norman invasion, the Scots overran northern England destroying many villages and it seems likely that Romaldkirk and much of the existing Saxon church were raised at that time. In 1086 the Domesday Book reports, "There is in Romoldscherce one carucate of land of the geld and there may have been two ploughs. Torfin held it, now Bodin holds it and it is waste...". The church and village were rebuilt and a survey made in 1306 suggests prosperity had returned but in mid 1300’s the Scots raided once more although the church appears to have been spared on this occasion. A valuation of church property carried out in 1535 by Henry VIII indicates that the village was again flourishing. In 1644, disaster struck again when one-third of the population died in the Great Plague. One inhabitant who did survive was Grace Scott. After building herself a mud hut on the fell-side, a mile from the village, she lived there away from the risk of infection until it was safe to return. "Gracie's Cottage" is the name of the farm that was later built on the same site. Most of the village today looks much as it did in the eighteenth century, blending naturally within the rolling hills of Teesdale.
