Frosterley lies eighteen miles west of Durham in County Durham and twenty six miles south west of Newcastle-upon-Tyne in the north east of England, close to the confluence of the rivers Wear and Bolihop Burn between Stanhope and Wolsingham. The village of Frosterley itself has medieval origins although Mesolithic flints and stones have been found in the vicinity and a bronze spearhead, found in a local quarry, dates back to the late Bronze Age, around 1000BC. The village has maintained its medieval character despite many of the original houses having long been replaced. The remains of St.Botolph’s Chapel lie to the north of the village, uncovered during excavation in 1995 and thought to have been built around the 10th or 11th century and dedicated to the popular east Anglican Saint who lived in the seventh century but about whom little is now known. It is thought that the village may have been named after him as the earliest reference occurs in the Close Rolls of 1239 where it appears as Frosterlegh meaning the clearing in the forest. The remains of the chapel are now surrounded by a housing estate. Frosterley Marble is black limestone containing fossil corals of the Carboniferous Period some 325 million years ago. When cut and polished, the result is a beautiful ornate stone which was particularly popular during the Middle Ages for church decoration.
