Just south of Darlington on the northeast coast of England, lies the village of Croft on Tees, in North Yorkshire in what was known as Richmondshire. It stands on the opposite side of the River Tees to Hurworth-on-Tees,on the A167, the bridge between them matking the boundary between North Yorkshire and County Durham – the exact point of transition being the fourth of the seven arches. St.Peters’ church in Croft is where Lewis Carroll’s father was rector and the character Cheshire Cat believed to have been inspired by a carving within. The nearby Croft Circuit, built on the former aerodrome called RAF Craft, a bomber base during the second world war, is a well known attraction for motor sport fans. The tarmac circuit is over two miles long and holds meetings of the British Touring Car Championships, British Superbike and the Pickup Truck racing series every year. The first records of racing being held there date back to the 1920s but t only became a significant venue after World War II. Atley Hill, nearby, was the site where a returning bomber, having made it all the way back from Germany, crashed into a tree killing all of the crew. Until the 1990s, the dead stump of the tree stood as a grim memorial to the crew until the landowner felled it.
