While the market town of Sedbergh is in Cumbria, it is also somewhat anomalously within the Yorkshire Dales National Park, with a National Park centre in the town’s main street. The town’s greatest claim-to-fame is Sedbergh School, founded in 1525 by a provost of Eton Roger Lupton. The “new school” built in 1716 now holds the library, most of the buildings dating from the 19th century. Sedbergh became an independent school in 1875, and is famed for its rugby. Happily the rule obliging boys to wear shorts was changed in 1974. The cobbled main street is narrow, with the mind and body well catered for along its length, pubs and restaurants mingling with antiquarian book shops – Sedbergh has become the Hay-on-Wye of the North. For those interested in military history there are the remains of a motte and bailey castle in the town. St Andrew’s church dates from the 12th century, and has some splendid stained glass. A less ceremonial church has roots here too, George Fox of the Quakers preaching at St Andrew’s and elsewhere in the area, and one of the oldest Friends’ Meeting Houses being built in the nearby village of Brigflatts in 1675. The rolling Howgill Fells surround Sedbergh, itself a hill-settlement, and there are also four rivers around it, giving the town an isolated feel in spite of the good network serving the town – junction 37 of the M6 is only three or four miles to the west, a feeling enhanced when the railway line closed in 1965.
