Nestling in lovely hill-farming country, Ravenstonedale has much to offer the visitor seeking a quieter experience than the nearby Lake District National Park provides. The village is easy to reach: by car, just seven miles along the A685 from junction 38 of the M6; or by rail, trains on the beautiful Settle-Carlisle line stopping at Kirkby Stephen five miles away. The village itself is a pretty one, with traditional white-washed stone cottages, sturdy stone walls bordering the fields, the Raven brook running through it, and happily a couple of pubs – the Black Swan a CAMRA award winner. The High Chapel in the village closed in 2006, ending a tradition of non-conformism supported by that church building since 1727. St Oswald’s church in Ravenstonedale is largely Georgian, a solid structure with a simple square tower from that era, though there are elements from older buildings incorporated in it, and the base of a Saxon cross just outside. The churchyard is impressive, a large space with some old and elegant trees in it, and to the north of the church excavations in 1920 revealed the foundations of a 13th century Gilbertine Abbey. Ravenstonedale is a base for exploring the Lakes to the west, or the Yorkshire Dales just a short drive to the east, but standing at the feet of the Howgill Fells, the rounded hills which signal the start of the Lakeland ranges, walkers may prefer to stay in the area and enjoy more tranquil outings than the more celebrated summits further west.
