Oxenholme was once a separate village stretching along the road between nearby Kendal just a couple of miles north west and more distantly to Kirkby Lonsdale to the south east, but these days it is to be considered almost a suburb of Kendal, one of the prettiest of Lakeland’s towns. Many visitors to the Lakes will have passed through Oxenholme, as its railway station has the branch to Kendal and Windermere leading off it to the west. But it is to be hoped that those travellers take the time to look at the station building around them as it is worthy of note, having been designed by Sir William Tite, the son of a Russian merchant who became President of the Royal Institute of British Architects, and created among other buildings London’s Royal Exchange. Tite was also the pioneering designer of many of the early railway stations, including Carnforth, Edinburgh and London Vauxhall (Nine Elms). The railway arrived at Oxenholme in 1846 By the station can be found the Station Inn, built at the end of the 19th century to accommodate and restore railway travellers, as it still does today, retaining a feel for those times of more genteel travel with an open fire in winter and good food and cask ales to refresh the weary.
