Newby Bridge is one of those small villages that by its location manages to offer a great deal more than would be expected of such a little settlement. Standing just a short distance from the southern tip of Windermere, a stroll will take you to Lakeside Pier, from which steamers head off to Waterhead (a minute from Ambleside) and Bowness, and Windermere’s bright lights. There is a ferry here too taking visitors across to Fell Foot Park, a National Trust property restored to its Victorian splendour, complete with rowing boat hire for a quiet pull on the lake. Newby Bridge is a stop on the Lakeside and Haverthwaite Railway, a steam line running the three and a half miles between the village of Haverthwaite and the southern shore of Windermere, so a stroll from Newby Bridge could be followed by a quick cruise and a steam train back. For a different aspect of the region the village is a good base for exploring the Cartmel peninsula, or venturing just a little further west to Furness, or east to Grange-over-Sands, like Newby Bridge once part of Lancashire-over-the-sands, now in Cumbria. For a small place Newby Bridge is well served as regards accommodation. What was Newby Bridge Mansion when it was built in 1793 is now Newby Bridge Hotel, a must for Wordsworth devotees – he was friendly with the Machels who owned it, and his correspondence with them is displayed there. The Swan Hotel was once a coaching inn in the days when Newby Bridge was on the turnpike to Kendal, and it retains its 17th century charm. The more modern Whitewater Hotel enjoys a fantastic location by the River Leven and the bridge for which the village is named, a lovely stone structure with five spans, built in 1651 though there were crossings here long before then. Just to the east of the village there is a holiday park on the wooded lake shores too, for those wanting to get closer to nature. The Leven is a noted fishing river, full of spawning salmon at the right season. The story of the salmon features in the many displays at the Aquarium of the Lakes at Lakeside, as does that of a less well known piscine resident of Windermere, the char. Even the otters are represented, so young naturalists can be introduced to a wide selection of the area’s fauna here.
