Low Lorton is a quiet little village in one of Lakeland’s less visited areas, a haven for those wanting a peaceful break or some fresh air without being offered Beatrix Potter memorabilia. Set beside the River Cocker (with its salmon and trout) at the end of Lorton Vale the village has the amenities required for a quiet sojourn in beautiful countryside. There is the Wheatsheaf Inn, selling the locally brewed Jennings (in fact until the end of the 19th century the beer was brewed in Lorton itself). There is a small shop too to save breaking the idyll and visiting nearby Cockermouth or Keswick, though both those attractive towns have much to offer. There is even a real find for the traveller, a Jacobean Manor House - complete with crenellated tower - that now operates as a country house hotel. This is farming country, with plenty of quiet lanes and gentle countryside to enjoy. Crummock Water, Loweswater and Buttermere are a short drive (or a good hike) up the vale via the B5289, not one of the busiest roads in the region, for those wanting to see their share of the lakes here, or Bassenthwaite Lake with its famous ospreys is within easy reach via the Whinlatter Pass, or the busier route through Cockermouth. For more serious walkers Grisedale Pike, Hopegill Head, and Whinlatter are just some of the surrounding attractions to be enjoyed safe in the knowledge of a comfortable welcome back to the village to ease muscles and fill stomachs afterwards.
