Longtown is an interesting Cumbrian town on the banks of the River Esk, close to the border of Scotland, home to three thousand people. The town has wide streets and an elegance from times long gone. Gretna Green is close by, as is Solway Moss, the location of a bloody battle fought in 1542. The impressive arched bridge spans the river where a gentle stroll will uncover some of Mother Nature's finest, or perhaps Oakbank will be first choice, blessed with fabulous lakes is a favourite haunt of fishermen and visitors to the Bird Sanctuary. The Old Blacksmith's at Gretna, is at the heart of a romantic legacy, however, if a wedding is not wanted, perhaps take a look at the Anvil and Coach Museum where magnificent horse drawn carriages take centre stage. If shopping is yearned for the Tartan and Tweed Shop is hard to beat, or why not savour a smooth mouth warming Malt at the Whisky House. For a fascinating insight into history the Border & Kings Own Royal Regiment Museum has evocative exhibits housed within the 16th Century Queen Mary's Tower in Carlisle Castle, and Artists may need an extra brush as they capture the magnificent Carlisle Cathedral which has seen 900 years.
