If Windermere is for tourists, Langdale is for walkers, and generally serious walkers at that, although there are creature comforts to be found in many inns here. Within the Langdale valleys (there are two Langdales, Great and Little) there are various settlements: the eponymous villages Great and Little Langdale; Elterwater, Skelwith Bridge and Chapel Stile, all with their own pub with a trade built on the walking enthusiasts who throng to the area throughout the year – the National Trust campsite here stays open all year round to accommodate those wanting to experience the real outdoors in all conditions. The area’s rocks were vital to the local economy long long before the leisure era. Pike of Stickle provided Neolithic Man with the raw material for a special polished stone axe head, traded throughout Britain, and even found in various places further afield in Europe. Quarrying slate has also long been important here, and there are two working quarries in the area still. But it is the pleasure provided by nature rather than the raw materials that is most significant these days. There are the Langdale Pikes: Loft Crag, Pike of Stickle, Pavey Ark, and Harrison Stickle among them, their southern aspect forming a seemingly sharp ridge. There is Dungeon Ghyll Force, a beautiful waterfall beloved of Victorian visitors. And for those who demand more water of the Lake District, there is Blea Tarn at the head of the valley, a beauty spot and a lure for fishermen with its brown trout and perch, and of course pike. And all around the fells: Lingmoor Fell separating Little from Great Langdale; Furness Fell beyond them; and views that reward those with the stamina to reach them.
