Holmrook, like much of the surrounding country, has Viking roots. The name is derived from the Scandinavian and means “Island of Rooks”. The Irish left their mark here too, in the beautiful 9th century cross in the churchyard of St Paul’s Ireton, a mile outside the village. This 10’ high cross pre-dates the arrival of the Norsemen, and is beautifully simple, without figurative design, its decoration being fret and vine patterns. St Paul’s church is a Victorian replacement for a more ancient building, but it is noteworthy for stained-glass windows by Burne-Jones. Holmrook is on the River Irt, where there is good Salmon fishing, and which in earlier days was noted for its mussel pearls. The settlement has retained those essentials of village life, pub, post office, church. Situated on the A595 coast road Holmrook is easily reached, and makes a good base for touring local sites: taking the Ratty narrow-gauge from Dalegarth Station two miles away to go up the Eskdale Valley to Boot, Eskdale Corn Mill, and the stone circles; or just a few miles away the Sellafield Visitor Centre, one of the UK’s most visited attractions for its hands-on take on science, and its Immersion Cinema; or for those seeking to stretch their limbs there are the fells aplenty to the east.
