Grange-over-Sands as we see it today is a product of the railway age, when what had been an inaccessible fishing hamlet metamorphosed into an elegant seaside resort. The best way to get to Grange-over-Sands is on the Furness Railway line that runs between Lancaster and Barrow-in-Furness, and which first came here in 1887, crossing the estuary over the scenic viaduct at Arnside a mile or so up from Grange. The town’s railway station still reflects the Victorian and Edwardian heyday of the place, when Lancashire’s industrial magnates built splendid houses there as weekend retreats (until 1974 Grange was in fact part of Lancashire, but was reorganized into the new county of Cumbria then). The famous Lancaster architectural practice of Sharpe, Paley and Austin, responsible for many of the Victorian churches in the area, designed the station, its glass canopies spreading protectively over the platforms, held aloft by slender and decorative cast-iron pillars. Many of the fine houses are now hotels, their guests enjoying the mile long promenade and the glorious views across Morecombe Bay, or the graceful parks provided for the town in Edwardian times. The sands are really mud-flats, with some quick-sands, but they provide a great habitat for birds. Behind the town is Hampsfield Fell, atop which stands Hampsfell Hospice, a stone shelter for walkers to get out of the elements, built by a local vicar in 1846, from which visitors can enjoy the panoramas out to the sea, or north to the foothills of southern Lakeland. Within easy reach of the town are Cartmel and its priory, Windermere with the steamer-stop of Lakeside only a few miles drive, Holker Hall with its famous gardens, and Ulverston, a little further along the Furness line.
