Gilsland is a small village that straddles the borders of Northumberland and Cumbria, in the heart of the rugged Border country, on the most spectacular section of Hadrian’s Wall. It’s unusual location incorporates two county councils and three civil parishes due to a gradual amalgamation of hamlets during the nineteenth century. Most of its houses are within the boundaries of Northumberland The village gains its name from George Gill Mounsey who built and partially endowed the Early English church of St Mary Magdalene and who also erected what is now the Gilsland Spa Hotel, located just north of the village. Originally built as a convalescent home for Co-operative Society members, the hotel is still owned by the Co-operative Group and the sulphur springs on which it is built, together with the delightful scenery, draws many visitors during summer months. Tourism started with the opening of a railway station in 1830 but has subsequently been closed and so the village is still somewhat isolated but funding is currently being sought to develop tourism and promote the area further as it offers an ideal base for exploring the Scottish borders, the Pennines and the Roman castles, forts and historic sites.
