Broughton-in-Furness is a delightful old Market town that's positioned on the southern edge of the Lake District National Park, on the banks of the River Duddon, and it is home to nearly nine hundred people. From a small rural settlement the town has grown since the 11th Century with the industries of cattle, fishing, wool and woodland crafts all playing their part. Walkers are tempted as it's surrounded by beautiful dramatic and unspoilt landscapes. The heart of this pleasant town will uncover a fabulous cobbled Market Square where Georgian Merchants houses and buildings still stand on three sides. In the middle of the Square an impressive Obelisk punctuates the skyline which was built in 1810 in commemoration of George III's Golden Jubilee. History is remembered with the old Market Hall, Stocks, and Fish Slabs which links with the past. There is a range of shops in Prince's Street, and Market Sq, restaurants and coffee shops to enjoy, and for something stronger there are a handful of historic pubs and ancient Inns dating back centuries. There is a Saxon church dedicated to St Mary Magdalene, a weekly market, and a chance to follow in the footsteps of Wordsworth, Roman's, and Vikings, all who have visited here.
