Warwick is a delightful town steeped in history and well worth exploring. It is perhaps best known for its magnificent castle, Britain’s Greatest Mediaeval Experience. A visit to Warwick Castle is a great day out for all the family.
Warwick has many other buildings of historic interest. Although the town was ravaged by the Great Fire in 1694, some important mediaeval buildings survived. The Lord Leycester Hospital is housed in a delightful group of timber-framed buildings dating from the late 14th century. There is also a Walled Garden, a treat for garden enthusiasts and artists alike. Nearby, Hill Close Gardens are charming Victorian gardens under restoration. Visit the Collegiate Church of St Mary’s, where the powerful Earls of Warwick lie entombed in gilded splendour in the Beauchamp Chapel.
In the market square, a 17th century Market Hall houses displays of Warwickshire geology, biology and history. You can learn all about the Great Fire of Warwick here. St John’s House is just a short walk from the centre of Warwick. An early Jacobean house, St John’s is a museum of Warwickshire social history and has period reconstructions portraying domestic and school life. For something different, why not try a day at the Warwick Races.
The streets of Warwick are great for browsing a large selection of antique, china and gift shops. There is also a wide variety of small specialised shops located around the Market Square, Swan Street and Smith Street.
Wariwck has an increasingly strong reputation for dining out and there is a good selection of pubs, wine bars and fine restaurants. And with a variety of hotels, B&Bs and the range of attractions it is perfect base for a short break or longer holiday.
