The village of Keresley lies to the North West of Coventry and can trace its history back to the Anglo Saxon period. Alongside the adjoining parish of Allesley it forms the largest extent of open countryside within the city boundary. The surrounding landscape is important as it is part of the only unspoilt area of Ancient Arden countryside left in Warwickshire. In the early part of the 20th century coal mining was begun in the area and as a result more new homes were built in the area to accommodate the incoming workforce. By 1939 the colliery was producing 1 million tons of coal a year. In the 1940’s and 1950’s the colliery continued with its growth attracting miners from South Wales, Scotland and he North East as well as East Europeans. The pit mined its last coal in 1996, and today a business park and country park occupy the site. It wasn’t always just the one village though, originally Keresley was two villages, Keresley Green, the first to exist, and Keresley Heath and they remained so until 1974 when they became one. One for the game of trivia – movie star and actor Clive Owen was born here and went to Binley Park Comprehensive School.
