The village of Berkswell in the Midlands in south Warwickshire, in between Balsall Common and Four Oaks. It can trace its history back to Anglo Saxon Times and boasts its own spring that flows into the nearby River Blythe. Complete with a village green and its local store this is a truly archetypical English country village. Home to one of the finest examples of Norman architecture in the Midlands the Church of St John the Baptist, built in red sandstone, dates back to the 12th century although it is believed that this was the site of an earlier place of worship. Set in its own grounds is the magnificent Berkswell Hall, dating back to sometime in 1670, the property as it stands today was actually built around 1815 and today houses a number of private apartments. To discover more about the area try a visit to the Berkswell Museum, a half timbered house that dates back to around 1500, containing local memorabilia. Whilst in the area a visit to Nailcote Hall will not go unrewarded, dating back to the 1500’s this black and white building has connections with the English Civil War. A rural idyll, the village of Berkswell is a hidden gem of a village, it offers a snapshot of village life and is an ideal base for those who wish to explore more of the area.
