The small village of Aston Cantlow is set amidst the rolling countryside of Warwickshire south of Redditch with relatively good access to the M5 and the M40. The village architecture mixes relatively modern properties with a number of perfectly maintained and well cared for Tudor timber framed houses. Cantlow was briefly home to William Shakespeare’s mother, Mary Arden who in 1557 married John Shakespeare, it is believed that the marriage was in the church of St John the Baptist, however shortly after their marriage they moved to Stratford on Avon. The church, St John the Baptist, is still there today, its chancel dating back to the 13th century although it is believed that the present site of the church was that formerly of a Saxon site. Aston Cantlow though remains very much a village today, it is probably best known for the architectural gems that delight at every corner, there is the Guild Hall of which part used to be the village jail, opposite is the Kings Head –a 15th century Tudor pub that today boasts some of the best food in the area (as well as a good pint!). In the heart of Warwickshire and more importantly in the Heart of England the village of Aston Cantlow is the quintessential English village.
