English settlements are at their loveliest when they look like nobody has tried to plan them, and that is certainly the case with the High Peak town of Tideswell, its rooflines like a boxer’s teeth as Georgian, Victorian and even Tudor buildings nestle close, the whole pulled together by the ubiquity of local stone, and with a medieval grid-pattern discernible in its centre. High Peak is right – the settlement is about 1000 feet above sea level in the limestone hills of North Derbyshire, at the approximate centre of a triangle whose points are Manchester, Sheffield and Derby, 25, 17 and 32 miles distant respectively. The architectural highlight of the place is St John’s Church, built in the early 14th century, whose grandeur has earned it the name Cathedral of the Peak. It is as lovely inside as out, famed for its wooden carvings and ancient tombs. Well appointed still for shops including a deli selling local oatcakes, and for characterful hostelries, though sadly the market which was chartered back in 1251 is no longer held, Tideswell is a welcoming and thriving local centre as pretty in winter as summer; the very best time to visit, however, may well be in the later part of June, when it holds its traditional well- dressing.
