Lying to the north of Junction 28 of the M1 in Derbyshire is the village of Tibshelf, lying close to the Peak District National Park. Tracing its history back to Anglo Saxon Times the village has enjoyed a varied history that has included mining and quarrying as well as being a location for medicinal springs and oil exploration. It was here in Tibshelf that the country’s first inland oilwell was sunk, today though a history of its short life can be found at the appropriately named Oilwell and Nursery Garden Centre on Chesterfield Road, the site of this former oilwell. At one time the village had three railway stations, testament to the economic growth of this village in the 19th century but the 20th century saw the decline of its industry, the collieries closed as did the railway stations. Because of its superb location the village has overcome these problems and today has found popularity with commuters who appreciate the close proximity Derby, Nottingham and Sheffield with the M1 offering easy access to the rest of the country.
