Melbourne is a large village with around 4000 inhabitants in South Derbyshire close to Derby city. It is mainly a residential area, famous for market gardens and shoe manufacturing. While only a handful of market gardeners survive today, in its heyday between the wars there were around 60 in business. The land around the village is now occupied with more conventional farming. The 12th Century Norman church of St Michael and St Mary is considered one of the finest examples in England and is built on the site of an earlier Anglo-Saxon building. It was originally intended as a retreat for the Bishops of Carlisle who often found themselves under threat of attack in their Northern parishes and in need of protection and sanctuary. Melbourne once had a castle, demolished in 1460 and today only a single wall stands behind Castle Farm. The 17th Century Melbourne Hall and gardens are open to the public during the month of August. As Melbourne is mostly a residential area surrounded by farmland, it has little in the way of exciting pursuits to offer tourists and is perhaps one of the less visited Derbyshire villages, many might think this an excellent reason to visit.
