Hope Valley in North Derbyshire spans the countryside from Castleton to Hathersage. It runs from East to West, flanked on one side by gritstone of the “Dark Peak” And on the other by limestone of the “White Peak”. It offers unrivalled natural landscapes for walkers, bikers, pony trekkers, hang-gliders, rock-climbers and potholers. And for those who enjoy more leisurely outdoor pursuits, it’s an ideal spot for painting, birdwatching and fishing. Mam Tor, or the “Shivering Mountain” At the head of the valley has become a popular launch pad for hang-gliders. The valley is scattered with small villages including Castleton with its show caves and Peveril Castle, built for William Peveril by his father, William the Conqueror, Hathersage with excellent rock-climbing at Stanage and associations with Little John and Charlotte Bronte’s Jane Eyre and of course, Hope village itself. Hope village church dedicated to St Peter can be traced to the 1200’s, artefacts of interest including a carved oak pulpit dated 1652 and a schoolmaster’s chair from the same period. In the churchyard stands a headless 9th Century Saxon preaching cross. A highlight of the village year is the Hope Valley Agricultural Show and Sheepdog Trials held on August Bank Holiday.
