About 15 miles West of Sheffield in North Derbyshire lies the valley of Edale. The valley consists of a few scattered farmsteads or booths as they are known locally, deriving from “Boothies”, Shelters used by shepherds tending their flocks on nearby hillsides. The village of Edale itself makes up part of Grindsbrook Booth, set in a beautiful spot below Kinder Scout at the start of the Pennine Way, the longest footpath in England. The houses are built from traditional Derbyshire gritstone and the schoolhouse built in 1819 is still in use today. With many tracks and trails for walkers and ramblers to enjoy, there are several local campsites for those who prefer being close to nature in the outdoors to staying in one of the two Edale pubs offering accommodation. Dedicated to the Holy and Undivided Trinity, Edale village church is a relatively recent addition, built as late as 1885. If you are feeling energetic while visiting Edale, take a walk up Kinder Scout via either Grindsbrook or Jacob’s Ladder, an ascent reaching 2088 feet at its pinnacle, the highest point in Derbyshire. And for those coming to Edale in search of local history, there’s always the Edale Visitor Centre.
