The Derbyshire village of Crich stands in the Derwent Valley with Alfreton, Matlock and Belper roughly equidistant. If you visit and think the place looks familiar maybe you have watched Peak Practice – the village was used as that programme’s ‘Cardale’. For others though Crich is more celebrated for being home to the National Tramway Museum which opened in 1959 and now houses around 50 trams, many of them in fine working order. The place has a third distinction to set it apart from its neighbours, in that whilst it nestles down in the valley, high on a ridge overlooking the place is Crich Stand, a tower built shortly after the end of the First World War as a memorial to local men who died in that terrible conflict. In 1952 it was re-dedicated to those men who lost their lives in the Second World War. Some 60’ high atop a hill it is said that on a clear day Lincoln Cathedral can be seen from the top of this imposing structure, and in all eight counties can be spotted with good eyes. Crich is also a thriving little community with several pubs and a few shops, a market-place cafe and even a gallery these days, and of course its lovely steepled village church of St Mary’s.
