The Derbyshire village of Baslow nestles on the East bank of the Derwint, which skirts the oldest part of the Anglo-Saxon settlement at Bridge End. A triple-arched stone bridge has forded the river since 1603. the old toll house stands at the Eastern end of the bridge, and a little further downstream are traces of the old ford. Travel upstream to scenes of breathtaking beauty where water tumbles over a weir near remains of the corn mill. On the riverside sits St. Anne’s church, restored in the 1850’s, its original 13th Century spire intact. Artefacts include a Saxon coffin lid built into the porch wall and the Victoria clock on the East face of the tower, whose face displays letters spelling “Victoria 1887”, Diamond Jubilee year. View authentic blacksmith’s tools near the Old Forge of 1696. Baslow has more than a village’s share of hostelries, but if a cuppa is your tipple, award-winning Tea-Rooms at Goose Green provide welcome refreshment. Continue on your way with a stroll through Chatsworth Park, or to Baslow Edge where village embraces moorland.
