The village of Bamford lies tucked away along the A6013 road in the Hope Valley in the Peak District of Derbyshire. The village has a population of just over 1,000 and is served by a railway station. The village is growing in popularity with tourists, although it does not have the history of tourism that nearby Hathersage has. The village is proving to be a popular location for those visiting the nearby reservoirs for Ladybower, Derwent and Howden. Ladybower is a popular destination, uniquely combining natural beauty with impressive feats of engineering. The Ladybower reservoir serves mainly for controlling the flow of rivers and compensating for the water retained by the other two reservoirs, but water can also be fed into the drinking water system if necessary. The dam has two spectacular 'bellmouth' overflows, which are locally known as the 'plugholes'. The parish church of St John the Baptist was built in the mid 19th century and there are also Methodist and Catholic churches in the village. Although Bamford Water Mill has been converted into residential flats, some of the original machinery still remains. Accommodation can be found at the Ladybower Inn, which overlooks the Reservoir and offers en-suite accommodation, including a ground floor suite for disabled guests.
