Topsham’s existence has been linked with the city of Exeter since at least Roman times, the settlement in those distant days serving as a port for its bigger neighbour, as it did for many centuries thereafter. As both have grown Topsham has become a suburb of Exeter, a rather genteel spot just four miles from that city’s heart. There is some fine and characterful architecture, some of the best buildings fashioned from bricks said to have been brought over by Dutch traders (buying our wool) as ballast, the houses constructed in suitably Dutch style. One of those buildings, a 17th century white-washed three-story house, now operates as a museum. Another not to be missed is the redbrick tower of St Margaret’s Church, dating to the 15th century. The town (as it has been since a charter was granted in the 14th century) is no longer a major harbour, though it still serves a few fishing vessels and many leisure craft, and remains a ferry port – albeit the ferries are a tiny boat that conveys passengers and bikes across the River Exe, at the top of whose mouth it sits, and another service that links Topsham to a pub near Exmouth. Rather more significant communications links include its own train station, the M5 that passes just north of the place, and Exeter International Airport that lies about five miles to the north east. Standing on the Exe Estuary Topsham is close to several bird reserves, including the RSPB’s Bowling Green Marsh. Among other nearby attractions you’ll find an adventure park, Devon County Showground, and Powderham Castle.
