Staverton is a charming Devonshire village on the banks of the River Dart in the picturesque South Hams. The spectacular Medieval bridge evokes thoughts of centuries past with it’s stunning arches reflected in the river, and the 14th Century Church of St Paul’s makes a pleasing interlude with architecture that reverses time in an instant. If that’s not enough take a look at Totnes Castle whose Norman outline sits high above the River Dart, or Compton Castle which would take centre stage in any Fairy Story. Maybe Buckfast Abbey will unveil the lives of the Benedictine Monks, with church, and fabulous book shop that has intriguing exhibits proudly displayed. Why not blow away the cobwebs, with a visit to Greenway, where country walks along the Dart Valley Trail is outshone by the kaleidoscope of colourful plants jostling for attention, what better way to arrive than by boat. Animal lovers are well catered for with thousands of animals at Paignton Zoo, or maybe the captivating faces of Otters will tempt a visit to Buckfast Butterfly and Otter Sanctuary. Or if the wish to ride on a Steam locomotive is often had, then climb aboard for a fabulous journey as it stops in a cloud of steam at Staverton Station.
