The tiny hamlet of Postbridge in Devon is little more than a collection of buildings. However, it still manages to attract thousands of visitors each year due to its prized location and individual attractions. Postbridge is situated between Moretonhampstead and Two bridges. It sits at the centre of the Dartmoor National Park, making it a favourite starting and ending point for ramblers and hill walkers. Visitors will find a shop, inn, information centre, toilets with disabled access and a car park. The shop stocks maps, guide books and other publications of local interest, as well as gifts and stationery. But by far Postbridge’s most famous monument and the one that attracts most sightseers, is the 14th Century clapper bridge which stretches across the East Dart river. Clapper bridges are granite river crossings unique to Dartmoor. They were constructed by tin workers and farmers as a means of getting over the many rivers which dissect the moorland. The one in Postbridge is one of the largest and finest examples of a clapper bridge, of which there are 30 in total on Dartmoor. Accommodation is available in nearby towns and villages and walkers are advised to always come prepared for changeable weather
