Parracombe is an attractive village with a small population in North Devon. It lies within a fold of Exmoor called the Heddon Valley. The river Heddon flows through the village; a trickling stream in Summer, but a raging torrent at the height of Winter storms. The floods which devastated Lynmouth in 1953, reached Parracombe, drowning one resident and causing much damage to property. Parracombe has a school, shop, inn and two churches. The old church dedicated to St Petrok stands on the moorside high above the village. It was a fine place of worship in its day, but today is in need of much repair and only used occasionally during Summer. A new church dedicated to Christ was erected in the village in the 1870’s. There are Barrows on Parracombe Common believed to be Bronze Age, and there is evidence of Bronze Age settlements in and around the village. The village of Parracombe itself does not hold much in the way of activity for tourists, but would make a welcoming and restful place to stay while enjoying days out walking and exploring Exmoor. Nearby is the Exmoor Zoological Park, and not far away the interesting villages of Lynton and Lynmouth.
