Ottery St Mary is an elegant town set in the rolling countryside of rural East Devon. It nestles in the valley of the river Otter from which it takes its name. The St Mary stems from the jewel in the town’s crown, the church of St Mary standing on a hill above the town. The church was designed by the Bishop of Exeter in the early 14th Century as a miniature replica of Exeter cathedral. Ottery St Mary is one of the oldest towns in Devon and locals celebrate their proud history each year on Pixie Day, the Saturday closest to the longest day. The tradition of the Flaming Tower Barrels on 5 November is another highlight of the town’s year. The poet and philosopher Samuel Taylor Coleridge was born in Ottery in 1772, the son of the parish vicar, Rev. John Taylor Coleridge. More recently, it will be recognised by Harry Potter fans as the inspiration for Ottery St Catchpole. The fascinating town walk takes in local history and heritage and sites include the 18th Century tumbling weir on the river Otter which provided power for the Georgian textile factory. Ottery St Mary is 20 minutes drive from Exeter.
