Okehampton, also known as Oakehampton, is a historic town on the edge of Dartmoor which lies to the South of the town. To the North reaches rural Devon and Exmoor beyond. It is perfectly placed for exploring the Dartmoor National Park, Devon and the neighbouring county of Cornwall. The many old coaching inns still existing in Okehampton pay tribute to its importance as a staging post on the highroad from London to Cornwall. Today it is linked by rail and road to the city of Exeter. The parish church of All Saints stands on the spot of a Saxon settlement. The church was rebuilt after a fire in 1842, only the 15th Century tower surviving. A Thriving railway town, at Okehampton station are a model railway and gift shop for visitors. In the town itself is the Museum of Dartmoor Life. This facility provides an insight into the heritage of Dartmoor, alongside exhibits of local art, crafts and history. Okehampton Castle was built by the Normans as the seat of the 1st sheriff of Devon, and stands in a beautiful woodland setting. And for the golfers, there’s a challenging golf course balanced on a hill on the edge of Dartmoor.
