Lynton is a small North Devon village. It sits 600ft above its coastal neighbour, Lynmouth. The two villages are joined by an innovative cliff railway which has been in operation since 1890. Apart from the relaying of tracks in 1908, the water powered railway runs just as it did when first built. Lynton and Lynmouth were affectionately called “Little Switzerland” By the Victorians. Lynton is an attractive village offering visitors stunning views of the beautiful Devon coastline. For a bracing walk and more amazing views, climb to the top of Hollerday Hill. A mostly wooded hill with the remains of an Iron Age settlement at its summit. The route up Hollerday Hill starts behind the Town Hall. Inside the Town Hall are a visitor centre, films, drama and exhibitions. The Lynton cinema is run by the community and fashioned in 1930’s style, a refreshing and nostalgic alternative to modern day multiplexes. A Farmer’s Market is held at the Hall on the first Saturday of the month. Lynton has its own museum and is home to excellent restaurants, cafes, tea rooms and arts and craft shops. Availing of the services of several nearby stables, expert and beginner horse riders alike can take in the natural beauty of the moors from the saddle. The famous Lynton and Barnstaple railway was shut down in 1935. The railway was originally built by the men behind the Lynton and Lynmouth cliff railway, but ceased operations due to financial difficulties. The day after it closed, a wreath was placed at Barnstaple with a note reading “Perchance it is not dead, but sleepeth”. It is these words that drove enthusiasts to work tirelessly to reopen the line. Part of the line has been reopened at Woody Bay, with steam and diesel hauled passenger rides throughout the Summer.
