Lynmouth is a small coastal harbour village in North Devon. Visitors can be rejuvenated with a breath of sea air and marvel at the wonderful scenery. It is perhaps most famous for the disaster which befell the local community in 1952. The two rivers which flow through the village down to the sea, the East Lyn and Hoaroak, flooded and many cottages were swept away into the sea with great loss of life. Memorials to this tragic time in Lynmouth’s history reside in the Memorial Hall. The village itself lies 600ft below another village, Lynton. The two are linked by an ingenious cliff railway which has been in operation since 1890. Apart from the laying of new tracks in 1908, the railway runs exactly as it did since its beginning and there has never been an accident. It offers spectacular views of the coast and is well worth a ride. The villages of Lynmouth and Lynton, were known by the Victorians as “Little Switzerland”. There are some lovely walks to be enjoyed in and around Lynmouth. Stroll up the river gorge to Watersmeet, where can be had a browse around the National Trust shop and a refreshing cuppa in their tea rooms. Travel West along the coastal path to the Valley of Rocks, where can be enjoyed breathtaking scenery and there’s even a resident flock of wild goats. Walk around Hollerday Hill overlooking the village of Lynton. Climb the hill if you feel up to the challenge, and at the top still visible, the remains of an Iron Age settlement. A different idea and an activity for all ages is on offer at the Exmoor Brass Rubbing Centre. Several local stables offer horse riding for both novice and experienced riders. The ultimate reward being an exhilarating gallop across the moors.
