In the valley of the river Lyd near the Cornish border, Lifton is one of the oldest Saxon villages in West Devon, believed to have been of military importance to those early 8th Century settlers. The church of St. Mary is a 1st Century building restored in 1871. There is also evidence of previous 14th Century work. The church houses a 12th Century font and some grand monuments to local dignitaries from the area’s past. For a real taste of Lifton, visit the Strawberry Fields Farm Shop. Open 7 days a week, visitors can pick their own strawberries, enjoy a home cooked meal in the traditional farmhouse restaurant, buy fresh from the shop, bakery and butchery and now…Homemade ice-cream! This family run farm shop is part of a working farm offering a real taste of Devon and an enjoyable day out in the countryside for all the family. Lifton also offers an art retreat for a creative holiday and opportunities to relax while fishing on the river Lyd. For places to stay, there are luxury hotels including the Lifton Hall Hotel and Village Inn and the Arundell Arms. Also available are self catering, B&B and traditional holiday cottages to let.
