Kingsbridge is an attractive town with cobbled streets and interesting little passages and alleyways just begging to be explored. It is situated in the area of South Devon known as the South Hams. One of its quaint alleyways is, for reasons unknown, called “Squeezebelly Alley!” Week day markets are still held in the town in the Elizabethan market hall, a fascinating building called the Shambles raised upon granite pillars. Different markets are held here on specific week days. In the 17th Century Grammar School building on Fore Street, can be found the Cookworthy Museum. It was so named after a local resident, William Cookworthy, who discovered china clay in the mid 18th Century. As well as an exhibition of some of the finest English porcelain ever made, there are 9 galleries of exhibits to be perused. On the way out, visitors can take a relaxing stroll through the lovely walled garden. The town’s position at the head of the Kingsbridge Estuary make it a perfect location for fishing and boat trips on the river. The abundance of excellent pubs, restaurants, cafes and places to stay have made the town of Kingsbridge a popular base for walking, rambling and cycling holidays.
