Amongst the rugged cliffs of the Atlantic is the North Devon resort of Ilfracombe. With elegant Victorian architecture and a lovely seafront, Ilfracombe has long been one of Devon’s most popular holiday resorts. The town has been a multi-winner of Britain in Bloom, with charming floral displays adorning streets and seafront. From the natural harbour surrounded by attractive coves, visitors can hire pleasure crafts for trips to Lundy Island. Overlooking the seafront is the Landmark Theatre, with an all year round programme of entertainment. There is also a museum displaying old and interesting local artefacts and photographs. It is no surprise that much of Ilfracombe life centres around the waterfront, with shop, café, restaurant and gallery owners taking advantage of the beautiful seaward views available. The highlight of Ilfracombe’s year is the Victorian celebration to commemorate the history of the resort. Two hills overlook Ilfracombe – Hillsborough and Lantern. The climb of 450ft to the summit of Hillsborough is worth the effort to see the remains of the Iron Age hill fort. Atop Lantern is St Nicholas’ church. Nature loving ramblers can use Ilfracombe as a base for walking the Torrs Walk, accepted as one of the finest walks in England.
