The village of Dunchideock in Teignbridge, South Devon lies close to Exeter. Hidden among the foothills of Haldon, it is a seldom visited place, but boasts many excellent places to eat, drink and stay. The name “Dunchideock” Is Celtic in origin and means “The wooded fort or camp”, probably a reference to the earthwork of Cotley Castle 11 miles away. The parish church of St. Michael’s was built in the late 14th Century and restored between 1875 and 1877. Renovations again took place in 1889 when the chancel was rebuilt. The church features many interesting fittings including a font dated 1400. There are some modern and 16th Century carved bench-ends as well as a fine series of carved roof bosses. Near to the church is a stone built Medieval house now converted into cottages, considered to be the site of the old rectory. Visitors to Dunchideock will most likely need to travel outside of the village to seek holiday adventures and it would make an excellent base from which to explore local sites of interest. For those who want a peaceful holiday retreat unspoilt by the trappings of modern tourism, this, one of Devon’s best kept secrets, would be ideal.
