The market town of Colyton in East Devon is situated only 3 miles from the World Heritage Jurassic Coast and a tram ferries visitors to and from the famous site. A short walk or more traditional horse and wagon ride will bring tourists back from the station to the town centre. Colyton has excellent shops to be browsed, including a renowned Antique Centre. Set in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, this Medieval town was once a thriving centre of the wool trade. Its location makes it a perfect setting out point for walking, cycling and exploring in East Devon. Colyton features many fine buildings ranging from the 14th to the 19th Century. These include a Tudor vicarage, an old church house, the Great House with its interesting chequer board façade and the old Court House were the dreaded Judge Jeffreys tried the local members of the Monmouth Rebellion. Perhaps this is why Colyton is held by locals as the most rebellious town in Devon. During the Summer months an open topped electric tram runs from Colyton to the close by seaside town of Seaton, where a variety of water sports are on offer including sailing, swimming, diving and windsurfing.
