Opposite Bigbury-On-Sea along the South Devon coast lies a tiny fragment of land called Burgh Island. This is a privately owned coastal holiday attraction offering the rare and much sought after combination of luxury and seclusion. During low tide the island is reached on foot across the strip of sand joining it to the mainland. When the tide is in the only means of transportation is a sea tractor on stilts which ferries visitors safely over the waves. Visitors can enjoy the peaceful privacy afforded by the remoteness from the hustle and bustle of the mainland and take in the beautiful scenery along the natural ragged coastline. There are two places on the island offering food, drink and entertainment and these range from the traditional Devonish to complete opulence. The ancient Fisherman’s pub serves traditional ales in a welcoming homely environment. If, however, visitors have come to the island to enjoy a more lavish lifestyle, the Burgh Island Hotel is the destination of choice. The hotel is in the art deco style and boasts a swimming pool cut out of natural rock. Vintage décor, sumptuous restaurant and 1930’s dinner dances round off the entertainment on offer to its lucky guests.
