“Buckfast” Meant a stronghold where deer and buck were held and “Leigh” Open pasture. Buckfastleigh is a small market town on the Southern edge of Dartmoor National Park. A climb up the hill above the town not only affords superb views of Buckfast Abbey, Dartmoor and the Dart Valley, but on its summit sit the ruins of Holy Trinity church. An outer shell is all that remains of the 13th Century building destroyed by fire in 1992. Still ringing out across the valley are the bells which survived and were re-hung. A tomb in the graveyard belongs to the Cabell family, once local nobility. A legend about one Cabell and a black dog running across Dartmoor to his tomb breathing fire allegedly provided Sherlock Holmes with the inspiration for “The Hound Of The Baskervilles”. Fancy making a wish? The Wishing Steps are two steps among the 196 leading down from the church ruins to Station Road which are laid the opposite way from the others. It is said that a secret wish made standing here comes true. Buckfastleigh is an excellent base from which to take cycling and walking trips along many of the local coastal, moorland and woodland trails.
