The village of Bridestowe in West Devon is so named after the 5th Century St Brigidia to whom its church is also dedicated. “Stowe” Means “Holy place of” And “Bridestowe” “Holy place of St Bridget”. A settlement at Bridestowe can be traced back to the Bronze Age. Visitors can obtain a “Book of Bridestowe” From the village Post-Office which documents the history of the village including feudal disputes and photographs of the old village. Bridestowe is a quiet rural village on the edge of Dartmoor and offers little more to its visitors than the peaceful tranquillity such locations have the privilege of enjoying. One interesting village fact is that until 2002, the village hall was a timber Nissan hut once used by General Eisenhower and in which he is reported to have signed some important papers. The main trunk road from London to Penzance ran through the centre of Bridestowe until the United States army built a bypass around the North of the village while stationed in the area during the Second World War. The glorious scenery and famous walks around Dartmoor make Bridestowe an ideal place to stay to get away from it all and truly relax and unwind.
