Reportedly the largest village in England, Braunton in North Devon is in matter of fact more like a town these days. Dissecting the centre of the village is the Caen stream, a tributary of the river Taw. Braunton took its name from St Brannock, a Welsh missionary who converted the locals to Christianity in the 6th Century. St Brannock founded a chapel in Braunton at a place where, in a dream, he was told he would find a sow with a litter of piglets. The later 13th Century church pays tribute to this with a carving of a sow with her litter on one of the carved roof bosses. The 16th Century carvings on the bench ends in the church are said to be the finest surviving in England today. Braunton has a small museum celebrating and commemorating the old local occupations of farming, fishing and sea faring. At Braunton Burrows not far from the village is a nature reserve, golf course and rifle range. Saunton Sands provide reasonable surfing opportunities. There are dangerous currents at the Southern end of the beach, so bathing is safer at the Northern end, where there are also toilet facilities, a shop and café.
