Babbacombe, affectionately known as the “Jewel in the crown of the English Riviera”, is situated in South Devon. It’s close proximity to Torquay makes it an ideal holiday location for people who want to enjoy the best of both worlds – the quiet traditional seaside holiday retreat of Babbacombe itself contrasted with the bustling and thriving Torquay for those more lively moments. The promenade affords amazing coastal views across Lime Bay as far as Dorset and even to Portland Bill. For such a small and quiet place, Babbacombe certainly has a lot to offer its visitors, from its very own museum to a fascinating miniature model village, whose amusingly small scale reproductions of buildings, people and vehicles capture England of the past, present and future. There are two beaches in Babbacombe and a harbour which can be reached on foot or by road. The Babbacombe Cliff Railway owned and managed by Torbay Council carries its passengers down to the beaches, whether they be railway enthusiasts or those who can’t manage the journey on foot. Free passage is extended to Guide Dogs, wheelchairs, pushchairs and prams. Feeling romantic? Since 1997 the Babbacombe Cliff Railway even has a license to conduct marriage ceremonies!
