Axminster is a quiet market town on the river Axe in East Devon. One of the earliest Saxon settlements in the county probably founded near the end of the 7th Century, However, it’s origins date back to Celtic times around 300 BC. Axminster is considered to be one of the remaining unspoilt market towns of today surrounded by beautiful countryside. Most famous for its carpets, the original Axminster factory was opened in 1855, though the business failed within 80 years. Visitors to the factory can witness the carpet making process invented by the Axminster carpet founder, Thomas Whitty. The streets in Axminster all converge on the main central town Square. Here on Axminster Green stands the Minster church of St Mary upon its Saxon foundations. The church’s fixtures of interest are a pulpit and reading desk dating from 1633. For those interested in local history, the Axminster museum is an ideal day out. The exhibits and collections range from traditional agricultural tools, archaeology, old photographs and carpet making. The museum is housed in the Old Courthouse, Church Street. Axminster has plenty of pubs and inns offering traditional food and accommodation, and there are holiday cottages for rent in the area.
