Ashburton is an ancient town positioned on the edge of Dartmoor in the heart of the Devonshire countryside, home to three and a half thousand people. The delightful church of St Andrew has an impressive tower rising 92’ and is an interesting interlude. The town dates back to Saxon times and played an important role in the Tin Mining Industry. The local Museum has a fascinating collection including North American Indian items…… Buckfast Abbey is a mile away and a tour around this famous Benedictine Monastery will explain the history and life of Benedictine Monks. The fascinating shop has items produced by Monks and Nuns, and a visit to the back of the Book Shop will reveal the Exhibition Centre….Walkers are always tempted to the great outdoors following The Abbots Way marked by stone crosses on the Moor just as the Medieval monks did. Maybe Totnes Motor Museum will please with fine examples of vintage cars, or there is always the enchanting sight of butterflies and Otters from all over the world, set within tropical gardens with sparkling waterfalls at the Butterfly and Otter Sanctuary. Or reverse the hands of time with a ride on the South Devon Steam Railway .
