Studland is situated on the Isle of Purbeck in Dorset. It is famous for its three beaches, South Beach, Middle Beach and Knoll Beach. Perhaps a part of the reason for the popularity of these beaches is that Studland is situated in a sheltered bay that is protected from the prevailing winds. At the south end of the bay are reddened sandstone cliffs and at the north end of the bay the cliffs are of Reading and London clay. The sandy beach has formed against this backdrop over a period of some 600 years. Studland's beaches attract a large number of visitors in the summer months but are also popular throughout the year due to the sheltered climate. There is a large area of heathland to the west of Studland bay known as Godlingston Heath. Standing on a mound in the heath is Agglestone rock, which is estimated to weigh 400 tonnes and stands 17ft high. Local legend states that the Devil threw the rock there from the Isle of Wight.
